Current HCV Treatments in BC as of March 2019

IMPORTANT: As of March 13, 2018,  anyone in B.C. living with this now-curable virus will have a choice of several treatment options – all of which are fully funded under BC PharmaCare, and all restrictions based on disease level have been removed.

There are many drug combinations available for treating hepatitis C in Canada which are also covered by BC Pharmacare.  Older combinations involved the use of interferon which had many serious side effects. The list below is of the latest and most effective drugs for treating hepatitis C in Canada. One advantage of having more than one treatment available is that options are available should drug resistance develop in a patient or within a community.

There are fewer side effects with the new drugs compared to those of earlier treatments (telaprevir, interferon). However, there can be serious side effects or drug-drug interactions for people with underlying conditions (such as heart disease, advanced cirrhosis, and HIV) to consider. Some of the newer combinations may still require the addition of ribavirin depending on the severity of the disease. As the treatment time now is much shorter than in the past, today’s ribavirin side effects (temporary but potentially unpleasant), thankfully, are not generally as bad as patients experienced a few years ago.

Your physician and clinical nurses will guide you through what you need to know and what you need to do to achieve a successful treatment.
